Last week we mentioned that State Records is having an Open day on Friday 28th October. There’s been a lot of buzz and excitement around here, loads of coffee and brainstorming.
The theme for the day is The Archives are Alive! At this stage, the plan is to have:
- a series of information sessions
- tours of the building which include the viewing of some of our ‘treasures’
- a ‘suitcase’ version of the In Living Memory Exhibition
- a ‘conservation clinic’
- a preservation workshop
- a digitisation show-and-tell
- a showing of some films from our collection, and
- other activities, I think BBQ may have been mentioned somewhere.
The information sessions will mostly be guests ‘outside’ of State Records talking about how they have used the archives for their research, work, hobbies, obsessions, what have you. There will also be a session on online resources, land research tips and dating photos using Web 2.0.
…and so our thoughts turned to you
Initially, Fiona and I thought a couple of our photo-dating gurus might like to talk about the resources they use to date our photos, here in the Moments in Time series and on our Flickr stream and share some well-deserved ‘eureka’ moments. But on further thought we realise that is a lot to ask and have instead been considering a panel-type Q&A session where we can use some dating photo examples from the blog and show off the sources, knowledge and tips our Archives Outside friends have shared with us. The session could even spill out to audience questions and we could use additional examples to highlight tips and stimulate discussion.

It’s a rare opportunity to share your tips and knowledge. We always say we aren’t the experts; we learn from you.
The session is limited to no more than an hour (and possibly no more than about 40 people) and we plan to use a lot of the time to display memorable Moments in Time together with tips from the list of dating photos tips we ‘crowdsourced’ last year.

What a great idea! Hope it all goes well. Alas, I’m not in Sydney so won’t be unable to make it. Would be interested in hearing how it goes though :-)
