Archives Outside - For people who love, use and manage archives

About

Archives Outside is managed by Fiona Sullivan and Anthea Brown at State Records NSW. Fiona is the Senior Project Officer, Distributed Management. Anthea is the Project Archivist, Online Services.

This website was developed to create a meeting place for people who have archival collections around New South Wales and researchers who wish to access them. While the main focus is on the State Records Regional Repository Network we welcome participation from all keepers of archives, from Archivists, Local Studies Librarians and Records Managers to members of Community Groups and Personal Collectors.

Welcome to Archives Outside

Welcome to Archives Outside: a meeting place for people who care for archival collections in New South Wales and researchers who wish to access them. Initially intended to focus on State Records Regional Repository Network we welcome participation from all keepers and users of archives, including:

  • Archivists
  • Local Studies Librarians
  • Members of Community Groups
  • Personal Collectors, and
  • Records Managers.

While we say “New South Wales” above we hope to see this space become more international, especially as there are common archival issues around the world.

Why “Archives Outside” ?

The aim of this site is to focus on archival collections in New South Wales that are held outside the custody of State Records, hence the name. We hope to achieve two things here:

  1. promote the content of archival collections in New South Wales, and
  2. provide information on topics and resources relating to the care and management of archives.

While our focus is on State archives we are interested to hear from others who are managing or have an interest in archival collections across the State. The goal is to have practical content that will benefit people who care for collections as well as those who wish to access them.

How to Participate

We hope to create an interactive community providing feedback and comment about archival collections and practical issues surrounding the management of collections in general.

The Archives Outside Team

Blog co-ordinator

Fiona Sullivan is responsible for liaising with State Records Regional Repository Network and overseeing the management of State archives outside the custody of State Records. She oversees and sources the content of the blog as well as posting and commenting from time to time. Fiona has been employed as an Archivist at State Records for … well, lets just say more about 15 years! During this time, she has  worked in a number of sections  including Disposal Regulation, Public Access, and now Archives Control and Management.

Who set up the blog?

Anthea Brown manages our website and online services at State Records and set up this WordPress blog using one of the many free WordPress themes available. She will be stopping by occasionally with updates about our online services and our participation in social media/Web 2.0 and may have a question or two about your own online environment. Anthea has been at State Records for over 15 years; she has extensive experience in the area of Public Access and has also worked in Archives Control and Management.  Anthea is currently employed as Project Archivist, Online Services.

Moments in Time series

Rhonda Campbell runs the successful blog series, Moments in Time. She posts on a fortnightly basis featuring a photograph from our collection and asks you to help us by adding to its metadata. Whether it be the when, what, or where, we hope to fill in some of the blanks. Rhonda is the Project Officer, Digitisation at State Records NSW and project manages the digisitation of record series. She is a very experienced archivist and has a specialised knowledge of our photographic collection.

I think I may have said this before but it deserves to be said again!
Your blog is really fantastic and so incredibly helpful to folk like me – who operate outside of a major city centre. Thank you for all the effort you put in!
    regards, Bronwyn.
